Anne van de Schaft explores the intrinsic relationship between the painting as an object and the process of painting itself. The texture of the canvas, the weight of the paint, and the movement of the brush are integral to her practice, forming a dialogue between intention and spontaneity.

The process of layering paint, erasing, and overpainting plays a significant role in her work, with each layer both obscuring and building upon the previous one. This process of construction and deconstruction allows the painting to carry the history of its own making, with traces of what was once there still visible beneath the surface. Through this process a new visual language emerges.

Each stroke records a moment in time embodying decisions, changes, and imperfections thus allowing the painting to evolve in unexpected ways.
